Day of crafts, Fågelsjö folkmuseum

Me and my son Johannes went to the day of crafts in Fågelsjö folk museum. Previous years I have been there and met basket-maker Säs Holger from Nusnäs, Dalecarlia. This year there was another basket-maker there, also from Nusnäs, selling baskets made of pine split by hand.

As usual you could also see the production of iron from mire-ore. The ore is put into an oven that has been dug out in the ground. The ore melts and runs down to the bottom of the hole. A lump of iron with a lot of impuritys is taken up from the hole and worked up to get the slag out. The show usually gathers a big crowd out on the yard. In connection with the production of iron there was a gun smith showing traditional casting of brass. His name is Magnus Wiberg and his speciality is handcrafted muzzleloaders (sorry, no photos, take a look at www.musketandrifle.nu).

Janne Eliasson, one of the resident in Fågelsjö, showed his craft in the yard by the Folkmuseum. Janne is a skilled artist and his speciality is wood and the traditional handtools associated with cutting in wood. Mother and daughter Dahlman from Mora, who has a house in the village, was showing craft made from birchbark, and embroydered pillows.

Me and Johannes stayed for a few days in one of the cottages that the folkmuseum lets. During our stay we also took the opportunity to take a look at the hut made of peat that has been built at Bäckedals residential college for adult education near Sveg (see photo!). The nature itself around Fågelsjö invites to many interesting expeditions. Like bathing in the river Voxnan in the middle of the wilderness! It is just unforgettable...
